Connect mail accounts, import the period you need, and link messages to the people you already know.
This guide explains how WireCat brings email into your agent's context: connect a mailbox, import the period you need and find mail alongside information about the people you know. Use it when you want to find a decision in email or prepare for a conversation.
After following the guide, you will be able to:
- connect the mailboxes you choose and import the period you need;
- link an email address to a person you already know;
- search and label mail with source references and check import coverage.
WireCat uses Memo for these tasks. Memo is a tool that runs on your computer and imports email into a local, searchable copy. Your agent can use that mail together with notes and downloaded messenger history.
Before you start
Install Memo using the notes guide. You do not need to import a notes folder to use email. Use a local AI agent on the same computer. Memo reads mail through Himalaya; configure the mailbox there before importing. Messenger history is optional, but must already be downloaded if you want it in the same answer.
Add email
Memo reads email through Himalaya, a separate mail program. Your mail account is configured there; Memo uses its name and address without needing a separate copy of the mail password. Ask your agent to help:
Help me connect the mail account I choose through Himalaya and add it to Memo.
Explain the account setup, then import mail from the date I choose.
Show the import result and tell me whether I need another run to finish that period.The account must work in Himalaya before Memo can import its mail. For manual configuration:
Add mail.accounts to Memo's configuration, keeping any existing settings. Default file locations:
| OS | Configuration file |
|---|---|
| Linux | ~/.config/cli-memo/config.json |
| macOS | ~/Library/Preferences/cli-memo/config.json |
| Windows | %APPDATA%\cli-memo\Config\config.json |
MEMO_CONFIG_DIR overrides the directory; on Linux, XDG_CONFIG_HOME also affects the default.
The example uses a Himalaya account named gmail; replace the name and address with yours.
{
"mail": {
"accounts": [{ "name": "gmail", "address": "[email protected]" }]
}
}name is the account label in Himalaya; address is your mailbox's address in Memo's store.
To use several mailboxes, add one entry per account to mail.accounts. On import, --account
selects the Himalaya name, such as gmail. Search results identify mailboxes by their addresses,
such as [email protected]. Addresses you link to people later are the senders/recipients,
not additional accounts you must log into.
Gmail is the default mode and imports All Mail. For another IMAP provider, configure
"mode": "imap" and "folders": ["INBOX", "Archive"] in the account entry, using your
mailbox's actual folder names.
memo mail import --account gmail --since 2026-09-01 --jsonChoose the first date you want to include. Each run reads at most 200 new messages by default; run it again to continue if the result says the import is incomplete. The mailbox is read-only: import does not send email or mark it read. Imported mail is stored locally; rerunning import can remove the stored text of mail that has disappeared from the source.
Link email to the same person
An email address and a Telegram or MAX identity remain separate until you explicitly link them. Linking records that they are the same person in the local store; it does not log in to another account or combine your mailboxes. Import the mail and store the messenger contact first. Replace the example username and email address:
tg contacts link @example_user email:[email protected]
memo context telegram:"Rin Example" --jsonFor MAX, use max contacts link with that person's MAX ID or name. Check the returned identities
and source references. A similar display name is not proof of identity. If several accounts of
the requested provider are stored, use memo context telegram:"Rin Example" --account 1 --json
with the account ID you actually use. See linking and unlinking people.
Search your mail
Use Memo to find the budget agreement in the mail account I choose.
Show the matching emails, who wrote them and their source references. Explain the imported date range and any missing data.To search imported email:
memo search mail 'budget' --jsonsearch mail searches imported email. Results can include more than one mailbox; check each
source reference and ask your agent to keep the results from the address you choose.
search all also searches messages and notes; skipped identifies any kind it could not search.
Missing hits outside the imported date window do not establish that no email exists there.
Label emails and keep notes about them
A tag labels a source; a note stores what you want to remember about it. Both are local. Replace the full message reference and thread/account IDs with values from your results:
memo tags add follow-up --message 'msg:email/you%40example.com/12345/67890'
memo tags add work --chat 12345 --provider email --account [email protected]
memo tags list --provider email --account [email protected] --jsonA full message reference carries its mailbox, thread and message IDs. For a thread label, both
--provider and --account identify where the thread belongs. These labels do not change Gmail
labels or mailbox flags. To save an assessment linked to one email:
memo notes add 'Waiting for a revised quote' --about 'msg:email/you%40example.com/12345/67890' --jsonSee creating, editing and exporting notes and tagging notes, contacts and messages for the full workflow.
Check the result
Check the selected mailbox, import date window and whether another run is needed. A context answer should list the email identity you linked and point to the relevant mail. If it does not, check that the address is linked, the needed date range was imported and the account was selected. An empty result from a partial import does not prove there were no agreements.
If mail is missing
- No mail account: check the Himalaya account name and its entry in
mail.accounts. - Only part of the period imported: rerun the import;
--maxbounds new messages per run. - Results include another mailbox: check the source references and keep the intended address.
- Mail is missing from person context: check the exact email identity link and imported history.
Continue with notes and source labels to keep your own context about the mail you found.
